The "Street Girl" Among Hyprocrites: Nazan Öncel

Resim
In Turkish pop music, there are a few singers/songwriters who left their mark like no other. For most, Sezen Aksu would be the first to remember but despite having some rebellious lyrics, she has never been the rebel. That status is reserved for Nazan Öncel. The Sokak Kızı (Street Girl) is such a master of the Turkish language that she would genuinely bring the street language up to a literary quality. Nazan Öncel may not be the most acknowledged artist in Turkish pop/rock music, considering her productivity and the novelties she introduced to the genre(s) but she definitely deserves the acclaim. Nazan Öncel might be one of the hardest-to-translate lyricists as she loves using idioms and "very Turkish" expressions in her songs but I'll try my best. The three songs I chose to translate here shows different sides of her artistic talent. "Ben Sokak Kızıyım" (I'm a Street Girl) is from her 1996 album Sokak Kızı (The Street Girl) and known by probably ever...

Mabel Matiz: Sound of Gezi in Turkish Pop

Resim
Today, I want to introduce you to the rising star of Turkish pop music, Mabel Matiz, and explain why I think his music represents the soul of Gezi Park protests .  In last three years, Mabel made a big journey from being an unusual sounding alternative musician to one of the most played artists in the mainstream music industry in Turkey. No, he didn't lose anything that makes him Mabel in the process, he brushed it even more, became more polished but still stayed true to himself and that's why we love him.  When he covered "Aşk Yok Olmaktır" (Love Means Annihilation) by Yıldız Tilbe in his 2013 album "Yaşım Çocuk" (I'm Children Year Old), no one could resist his version . Yet, Mabel is much more than a one-hit singer. He carried his success, as well as the culture of Gezi Park protests in his lyrics and videos, to his 2016 album "Gök Nerede" (Where is the Sky?") where he made another cover , this time for Nazan Öncel's "Bir Ha...

Neither my fight, nor my passion has ended

Resim
The fifth song of legendary Sezen Aksu's 1991 album Gülümse (Smile), Ne Kavgam Bitti Ne Sevdam (Neither My Fight, Not My Passion Has Ended), has always been a big hit. One of the most productive Turkish singers/songwriters ever, Sezen Aksu has changed the face of Turkish pop music and made it very poetic. Her music is well-acclaimed by all segments of society, however, in latest years she has been criticized (unjustly, in my opinion) for "supporting terrorists or the conservative government" as she called for peace-making process with the Kurds as well as a more democratic Constitution. She is not as big as before but her songs, especially from the 90s like this one, will not be forgotten any easily. I have found two other English translations for this song but my version is slightly different. First of all, I have translated "sevda" as "passion" not as "love" because sevda also refers to a very big and somehow out-of-control want. "...

Are you out of touch with calendars?

My Turkish->English translation for "Takvimlerden haberin yok mu?" (Are you out of touch with calendars?) by Gülay. Looking forward to your feedbacks! Here is the song and this takes you to the Turkish lyrics. Enjoy the melancholy! Are you out of touch with calendars? The years are passing Offended by me, never smile at me Those cruel mirrors Some of us tired, some of us in love Some are rebellious The harsh truth is our lives are water The years are passing... The time is late, they say, the road is irreversible The heart regrets From now on, drinks are my friends Nights my enemies Where are those waited for? For years, I've hoped for Memories at full speed The nights do me no good

Athena - Make No Sound

Athena - Ses Etme https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNPei56WhAk You chase after yourself As if you say if this is life then I'm out You always come back to the same place As if you start over Dress your wound, let it not get infected And have a glass of water afterwards, if you can It will pass, it actually does And before you know it, the room is empty It seduces your heart Running in your blood, crazy And you melt down, no remedy It hurts, hush, make no sound You wrote this line, it's not her fault You wanted "be like that", you wanted "die!" One by one, however you wrote it You just look for no reason And that's it It's like he hurts It's like he loves It's actually like he loves http://www.sozmuzik.gen.tr/a/athena/ses-etme/ 04.10.2016
